The
formation of The Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Golf Captains was
considered a possibility by Mr. C. R. Jenkin, who was Captain of Brokenhurst
Manor and also a Past Captain of Stoneham. He had numerous discussions
with other Past Captains and in particular Mr. L. G. Hunt, a Past Captain of
Brokenhurst Manor. Both gentlemen felt that there was considerable
support to align Hampshire with Past Captains organisations of other Counties.
As a result of their initiative,
a meeting was held at the Wessex Hotel, Winchester, on the 16th November
1972. It was attended by 31 Past and Present Captains representing 11
Hampshire Clubs. Many supporting letters were also received from
other Past Captains.
The successful outcome of this
meeting resulted in the Captains being formed and membership was offered to the
Captains, Past and Present, of all Hampshire clubs affiliated to the Hampshire
Golf Union.
A set of rules were also approved
and the following became the first elected officers:
President: Mr. M. Pinker,
Rowlands Castle
Captain: Mr. C. R. Jenkin, Brokenhurst Manor
Vice-Captain: Mr. L. G. Hunt, Brokenhurst Manor
The rest is history and the
Association, as it is now called, has grown considerably and gone from strength
to strength.
